If your new home isn’t ready when you leave the UK, we can keep your belongings in storage until you need them.

Customs and Paperwork

Since the UK left the European Union, household goods moved from the UK to an EU country go through customs. In most cases, people moving their main home to an EU country can bring their personal belongings in free of import duty and VAT under the EU’s Transfer of Residence relief. The general conditions are that you have lived outside the EU for at least 12 months and have owned and used your belongings for at least 6 months, but each country applies its own rules and forms.

You will usually need:

• Your passport
• Proof of your new address or residence in the destination country
• A detailed inventory of the items you are moving
• Any customs application form required by the destination country

Some items, such as food, plants, alcohol and tobacco, may be restricted or need declaring. We can help you prepare a clear inventory and talk you through what to expect, but please check the latest requirements with the customs authority of your destination country before you move.

How Long Does a European Move Take?

Timescales depend on your destination, the size of your move and the customs paperwork. When you book, we agree collection and delivery dates with you so you can plan your travel. Booking early gives you the widest choice of dates, especially in the busy summer months.

Preparing for Your Move Abroad

A little planning makes an international move much smoother. In the weeks before you go, we recommend that you:

• Check the customs rules and documents needed for your destination country.
• Decide what to take, sell or donate, as moving less can reduce your costs.
• Make sure your passport and any visas or residence documents are up to date.
• Arrange utilities, internet and a mailing address in your new country.
• Keep important documents, medicines and valuables with you rather than in the van.
• Tell us about access and parking at both addresses, including any narrow streets or lifts abroad.
